2020 in Hindsight

30 December, 2020

Life has been crazy over the past two years and, although I haven’t kept up with my blog, it is not because I’m languishing. Quite the opposite, in fact.

As you may or may not know, Linda and I sold most of our worldly possessions in 2014 and opted for a life on the road in a motorhome. It has proven to be one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. Not only has it afforded me some amazing opportunities for photography and film but it has also expanded my mind. Although the United States is one country, there are many cultures contained within it. There is also a wide diversity of landscapes and it has been a privilege to visit many of these places in the off-season.

By the end of 2018, we had visited 49 of the 50 states. We couldn’t manage to drive our motorhome across the sea to Hawaii, unfortunately. It was now time to start thinking about a new adventure. Why not move to an entirely new continent, we thought. So in 2019, we relocated to Europe and have continued to travel right up to the present.

Lucerne, Switzerland

When COVID hit, we were just returning from a 6-week tour of Morocco. That’s when the first lockdowns began. We hunkered down for the duration in a small campsite just south of Paris. After 3 months, we began traveling again to Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, the list goes on. We were in a unique position to visit world class cities with virtually no tourists about. It was eerie to say the least and I don’t think we’ll ever have another opportunity like this but we certainly made the most of this past year. We have a separate travel blog that documents all of our travels in the United States and across Europe, including my favorite photography and film from 2020. When I began capturing images many years ago, my first passion was video. I loved the idea of creating self-contained worlds inside the wrapper of a short film. Photography took over at some point as my primary focus but recently I have been returning to the moving image.

Edward Levinson, a fellow-photographer friend of mine began experimenting with video using a plastic pinhole. I had already been creating photographs for a couple of years using this technique but never really thought to use it for video. Inspired by what he was doing, I was able to successfully create some really interesting footage. It is reminiscent of something from the Silent Era. So I began shooting the desolate streets of these European cities. I coupled the footage with a narrative of thoughts I had about the pandemic which eventually just morphed into my own philosophy of life. It was a prolific exercise and turned into a series of short films. You can see them here.

When I wasn’t shooting films and photographs, I was creating instructional videos on my YouTube channel focusing on image post-processing.

I’ve been friends with musician Michelle Casillas from the band Ursa Minor for almost a decade. She is gearing up to release a new album and was interested in collaborating with me to create some music videos. The project ended up being very fulfilling and I think it yielded some of my best work. The two videos we worked on will be released in the new year and I’m excited to share them. I’m proud of the work and am a huge fan of the band’s music. So keep an eye on their site for more information. I’ll also be announcing here on my blog when the videos are released.

So it’s not surprising I haven’t been able to get to writing about everything that’s been going on. Hopefully, I will now return to publishing more frequent blog posts as the new year begins. Let’s hope it’s a good one.
